Oriental Medicine is a holistic and comprehensive system of healthcare which originated more than 5,000 years ago in China. The most well-known techniques are acupuncture and herbal medicine; but other aspects include Tui Na (massage), as well as nutrition and lifestyle options based on principles of Oriental Medicine.
At Centers for Integrative Medicine and Healing, we believe that acupuncture and herbal medicine is the answer to many basic health problems. Conventional (Western) medicine excels at providing fast, emergency care and treating advanced stages of disease with life-saving techniques. However, when it comes to everyday healthcare issues — the common cold, aches and pains, digestive problems, allergies — or chronic problems such as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, conventional medicine has fewer options to offer.
Many patients are tired of drugs and surgery as the answer to their health problems. Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is a non-surgical, natural solution which can be long-term and even permanent. We don’t treat just symptoms, we treat the root cause in order to correct a problem.
Acupuncture
The practice of the healing art of acupuncture includes insertion of needles into the human body by piercing the skin of the body, for the purpose of controlling and regulating the flow of energy and blood in the body.
Oriental Medicine
A form of primary healthcare, based on classical Chinese medical concepts and modern Oriental medical techniques, that employs Chinese medical diagnosis such as pulse, tongue, palpatory and observational diagnosis as well as acupuncture therapies and diagnostic techniques based on newer scientific models for the assessment, treatment, prevention and cure of any disease with the purpose of full health restoration. The techniques and modalities of Oriental Medicine include acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, laser acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, TDP and infrared lamps, Tuina, Qi Gong, Gua Sha, thermograpthy, herbal GMP standardized therapy, homeopathy and supplement therapy, Chinese dieting therapy, breathing exercises and life style change consultations.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is an Oriental Medicine technique using the mugwort herb which is aged and ground up into a fluff and then burned. Moxa is used to warm different points and regions of the body to stimulate circulation through acupuncture points- strengthening the blood, creating a smoother flow of blood and qi and maintaining general health. Moxa is considered to be most effective in treating patients with chronic symptoms of pain or illness. There are direct and indirect methods of treatment. The direct method is to place Moxa directly on the skin while an indirect method consists of using rolls of Moxa and holding them over the point or points being treated.
Cupping
Cupping is a technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves application of acupressure by creating a vacuum on the patient’s skin using glass cups. This form of treatment is mostly effective when treating stagnation as well as treating respiratory diseases and musculoskeletal pain. A vacuum is created by air which is heated by fire in a glass cup placed against the patient’s skin, stimulating the acupressure effect. This process stimulates the blood flow through the body and to the muscles.
TDP Lamp
The techniques of using a TDP lamp helps to sooth and heal damaged tissues that are sending pain to the rest of the body. The use of the lamp will help stimulate the blood flow and heal injured muscles, tendons, ligaments, connective tissue and even bone. It promotes metabolism and diminishes inflammation in the body
Gua Sha
Gua Sha involves repeated strokes with a smooth edge over lubricated skin. The Doctor first lubricates the skin with oil and then with a smooth edge presses down firmly while moving along the muscles or along the pathway of acupuncture meridians. Patients feel an immediate sense of relief after a treatment of Gua Sha. In doing this form of treatment, blood circulation is no longer stagnant and instead considered pathogenic, which promotes a normal circulation and metabolic process. This is a valuable method in prevention and treatment of many acute and chronic disorders.
